Terpene Isolates 101: Laurene

If you're just getting started with terpenes, odds are you're wondering how each isolate can be used. Terpene isolates can be used in hemp, CBD, and cannabis products as well as concentrates, vapes, foods, beverages, and aromatherapy infusions. In fact, adding terpenes to health and beauty products, cosmetics, vaporizers, foods and beverages, and aromatherapy infusions is a great way to add an extra boost of body-nourishing benefits to your products and make THC/CBD products more effective. This week, we're diving deeper into the sweet, floral terpene isolate known as Laurene.

laurene terpenes are found in several species of algae and kelp.

Laurene Isolate

Laurene is one of the least studied terpene isolates available on the market. However, it still plays a vital role as a flavoring agent and a scent-booster in a variety of different industries. It even offers a handful of its own medicinal benefits, leading to further study in cancer patients and as an antimicrobial agent.

However, we still know very little about this terpene. What we do know is that Laurene is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon derived from a species of red algae known as Laurencia which grow in temperate and tropical shore areas. It offers a unique sour citrus aroma with floral notes, making it a common addition to many soaps, cosmetics, and perfumes.

As far as we know, Laurene is only found in species of Red Algae in the Rhodophyta family. Many of the studies conducted on Laurencia and the consequential benefits found were conducted on the plant's many bioactive compounds, including terpenes like Laurene, which it has many of.

Below, we'll touch base on a few of the benefits and uses of Laurene terpenes as well as where they can be found naturally and how they can be used.

Benefits of Laurene Terpenes

As we mentioned in the previous section, there are very little studies attributing Laurene terpenes to medical uses. We do still have a handful to pull from, though most studies were conducted on the full spectrum of terpenes found in red algae and some species of kelp containing Laurene terpenes.

Please keep in mind that further study is still needed to fully solidify the health benefits of Laurene terpenes. Always talk to your doctor before starting any dietary supplement or health regimen to rule out any possible complications, even ones caused by naturally-occurring, food-based terpenes since many can be harmful in higher than natural concentrations.

With that in mind, there is evidence to suggest that Laurene, like most other terpenes, is antimicrobial in nature. A 2012 study found that Laurene terpenes from the algae in the Red Sea were able to effectively kill several strains of viruses, yeast, and bacteria. The study also concluded that it showed "very promising activity" against tumor cells in mice.

The other studies were conducted on the Laurencia species of red algae found in the Red Sea. It contains a large number of Laurene terpenes and modified Laurene terpenes that were found to promote a variety of effects in a review published earlier this year. The study found that the terpenes and other bioactive compounds derived from red algae are an important tool for the formulation of new drugs and delivery methods in a variety of applications.

The review outlined red algae's variety of potential uses and properties, including its anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, and insecticidal properties. The study also posed a few questions, detailing that the plant has the properties to make it a potential contraceptive, laxative, or insulin regulator.

However, those studies weren't conducted on Laurene terpenes alone. If we're sticking to the facts and not the speculation, Laurene is currently a simple antimicrobial and anti-tumor agent.

Natural Sources of Laurene Terpenes

Laurene terpenes have currently only been documented in ocean-dwelling plants in the Rhodophyta family, which includes several species of red algae, including Laurencia, which contains the highest number of Laurene terpenes. It is currently not documented in any other plants or plant families.
