BEVERAGES AND TERPENE INFUSIONS

When we think of terpenes, we tend to jump straight into cannabis terpenes and how they’re used to enhance the flavors of cannabis extracts. However, with terpenes, there’s a lot more to them than meets the eye. For one thing, terpenes are great for our bodies. They’re found in every fruit and flower and can encourage a variety of different health benefits and mental effects. They can boost the effectiveness of essential oils, proteins, antioxidants, vitamins, and even cannabinoids when they’re introduced to the body.

Many people stick to terpenes for boosting the effectiveness of cannabis products. However, they can be used by and introduced to the body in a variety of different ways. In fact, every time you eat fruits or vegetables, you’re adding a ton of beneficial terpenes to your body. As science uncovers the many health benefits and possible mental effects of terpenes, a health craze is developing and forcing more industries to include additional terpenes in their foods and beverages, and for a good reason! In this post, we’ll dive deeper into terpene-infused drinks and a few ways you can get the most out of terpenes by adding them to your favorite hot and cold beverages.

Terpene Beverages

Terpenes are responsible for a variety of health benefits and mental effects. They can directly affect body processes by acting as anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants (among others) as they work in unison with other nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and cannabinoids in a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. Other terpenes are great for pain relief and promoting relaxation, rest, and sleep.

Some terpenes are beneficial for their effect on people through smell or taste alone. Pinene is a pine tree-scented terpene that tends to stimulate the brain and promote feelings of calm. Linalool, the primary terpene found in Lavender, is excellent for stress-relief and calm. On the other hand, you have terpenes that taste great, like Limonene. Limonene is lemon-scented and flavored and promotes energizing and mentally uplifting effects.

For many people, the terpene craze is in full swing. Consumers are looking for more and more ways to introduce terpenes into the body to improve their mood, lower their level of pain, or boost the effectiveness of their vitamins, supplements, and cannabis products. Many companies are taking advantage of the terpene health craze by introducing them into their signature beverages, cocktails, sodas, and syrups.

Terpenes work for odors and flavors in the same way aromatic and flavorful herbs and spices work in the kitchen. Like spices, multiple terpenes can be blended to create unique and in-depth flavor profiles with accompanying mental effects. For example, a few drops of Limonene in a fish dish completely changes the flavor of the entire piece of fish. That lemony zest creates a pleasant contrasting flavor with the fish, but also promotes the health benefits of Limonene and the vitamins and minerals found in the fish.

Some restaurants are taking advantage of the versatility of terpenes when it comes to beverages. There is an innate desire for terpene-infused products, so many bars and restaurants are introducing terpenes and their many health benefits to their foods and drinks. For example, Prank Bar in Los Angeles offers a whole line of terpene-infused cocktails and kombuchas.

Their signature cocktail, the Mon Frere, contains gin, orange bitters, and Limonene terpenes. The limonene terpenes work with the orange bitters to promote an uplifted and energized feeling which counter-acts the depressive effects of alcohol. Additionally, Dave Whitton, the owner of Prank Bar, says that the ginger in their house kombucha is too sharp until the Limonene is added to the top, which serves to soften the harshness of the ginger. As for himself, he credits these terpene-infused drinks with having given him a better mood and more energy.

On the other hand, many craft breweries from coast to coast are getting in on the terpene action. Terpenes can add a greater sense of depth and flavor to many different types of beer. Many different terpenes are already found in high concentrations in hops, though diverse and unique terpenes can be added to create something that tastes and makes you feel entirely different.

Infusing terpenes into beverages

Infusing terpenes into beverages is pretty easy when you’re working with water-soluble terpenes. All it takes is a drop or two in a bottle of water for an uplifted mood, pain relief, or stress-relief all day long. For an average user, 1-4 drops per 8 ounces of water is all you need to enjoy terpene health benefits.

As for commercial companies, bars, restaurants, breweries, and distilleries, terpenes can be added to large batches of products with ease. For a gallon of terpene-infused beverages, you’d want to use about 8 ounces of terpenes.

However, there is really no right or wrong as far as creating flavors goes. The best thing you can do is experiment with flavors and odors that you enjoy and playing around with your concoction until you love the characteristics and the associated health benefits or mental effects.
